The inaugural Evonik Coatings Venture Forum established contacts between the company and promising start-ups from the areas of paint, coatings, and printing inks. Evonik Venture Capital, the Coating Additives and Crosslinkers Business Lines invited 13 start-ups from seven countries to present their new products and technologies for the coatings market. “With this forum, we wanted to establish contacts between our business lines and young, innovative technology companies in order to discuss future trends in the coatings industry and, as well as create the basis for possible cooperation agreements,” explained Dr. Bernhard Mohr, head of Evonik Venture Capital, who organized the event.“We talked with young, dynamic companies in order to gain new impetus and innovations for our businesses,” highlighted Dr. Gaetano Blanda, head of Coating Additives. “This is why we were happy to support the forum.” His colleague, Roberto Vila-Keller, head of Crosslinkers, confirmed that “the contact with world class start-ups is useful to get new ideas and very specific approaches for cooperation agreements.” Follow-up activities were agreed to with all 13 start-ups and the first product samples have already been exchanged.
In preparation for the forum, Evonik Venture Capital and the two business lines intensively examined the business ideas and products of about 80 start-ups. Thirteen of them were given the opportunity to introduce themselves at the forum. The technology fields addressed were: antimicrobial, polymer and particle technology, and coatings with advanced functionalities. One interesting example are highly specialized peptides that could considerably improve corrosion protection for metals, which due to their high costs in the past have not been used in applications in the coatings area. Numaferm may be about to change that: It has developed an innovative process that significantly reduces the production costs of these peptides. Velox-Digital presented a completely new method for large-scale digital printing on packaging; to date, this has been possible only in small scale. This would allow several hundred packages to be printed with the highest digital quality every minute, and also enables individualized packaging.
